Naugatuck kicked off the 2012 season in impressive fashion Wednesday night with a 48-20 pasting of Wilby before Woodland pounded Sacred Heart 46-0 on Thursday. Watertown suffered a 34-13 loss to Montville in its season opener.

Tonight, it’s the big game of the week: Ansonia at Torrington. There’s been Twitter smack on both sides of the aisle and it sounds like the Red Raiders could have their biggest home crowd in years. Hopefully it’s a better game than last time around (scroll down or click here for our preview and picks).

WAPJ will have the call of the game at 89.9 FM and 105.1 FM. Of course, you can also click here for the live radio stream, starting just a little before 7 p.m. Also, thanks to ksoldra, we’ve posted the live video stream for the event via the CIAC Network.

We will also have live tweets from that game and plenty of others, hopefully including Holy Cross-Crosby and Seymour-Whitney Tech. You can see all the scores we have in the live scoreboard, which is presented all season long by Valley Discount Oil.

Also, check out the Red Zone blog, where Kyle has plenty of new material up, including his preseason power rankings, a countdown list of things to watch this season, what Naugatuck’s and Woodland’s win may tell us about this season, and picks for all of tonight’s Greater Waterbury games.

(Live scoreboard widget is removed after the week’s worth of games are over.)

  2. Kyle doing a great job broadcasting tonights game ,seems to be a natural behind the mic.

  3. Woodland just lost one of thier receving threats, Roundtree ejected for fighting, and suspended for next weeks game against Ansonia. makes life a little easier for the Chargers.Big loss for Woodland.

    • Don’t know all of the details. But it sucked to hear that news when it was reported. No place for that in HS sports. I’m sure the Woodland staff will make sure that doesn’t happen again.

  4. Thanks a lot, chargerfootball. It was fun to put on the headset again. That’s what I went to school for so it’s nice to get going.

Rahmi Rountree was involved in a scuffle with two Sacred Heart players, and when it escalated Rountree threw something that resembled a punch, according to the officials. It looked like more of a push to the helmet to my eyes but that’s probably close enough.

It’s too bad that the ejection basically overshadows a tremendous team performance. Tanner Kingsley threw for five touchdowns and the Hawks’ defense allowed 51 yards.

I’m loving the Ansonia-Torrington Twitter smack!

  5. next time ill get to the game earlier…but i walked into municple stadium and it was 33-0 in the first…im like how did i miss all the action that quick?

  6. boy,was i taken in on Watertown. Are they that bad or is Montville that good.

  7. I was at the Watertown game and was not impressed by Montville at all. It looks to be a long year for Watertown again they will be lucky to get to 500 especially after an expected 0-2 start. I would guess 3 wins 4 tops.

  8. Too bad for Watertown. I thought they might have been able to make a little noise. There’s still time, I guess.

  9. Ansonia, Holy Cross, and Seymour, are winning like its practice. Kinda not fun to watch. Although Torrington student body had it coming.

  10. You may want to reconsider not having Ansonia as your game of the week.It looks like nobody in the NVL will give them a close game.Kind of reminds me of 2011 and 2010 and…..you know a FEW other years.

  11. So, pretty much like we thought except Ansonia’s defense was a little better than we thought.

Things don’t change, whether that’s good for some of you or bad for the rest of you. Oh well.

    • When will a team step up to challenge ?
Starting QB breaks a leg and another QB Steps in and they put up 60+ points against a team that is predicted by some to be in the top part of the league.

  12. Someone correct me if I’m wrong on this. Ansonia’s 1st team offense ran a total of 17 offensive snaps (16 in the first half, 1 in the second half) when they started shuffling backups in after Matos’ TD to open the second half. They scored 9 TDs on 17 snaps. Their longest drive was, I believe, 3 plays. Talk about quick strike offense.

  13. A challenge to Ansonia isn’t coming until some team mans up and plays old-school defense. Nobody does it anymore outside of Ansonia.

If you’re a player reading this comment, take that as a challenge because I don’t want to waste the next three months seeing 70 points on the scoreboard every night.

    • Honestly, after witnessing the game last night, no one in this league will beat this team unless they have the game of their life. Holy Cross is next in line but in
my humble opinion, it’s only a matter of “how many scores will each team lose by?”

Ansonia lost its line, sure. But hat squad has a more versatile QB this season and looks so much more dangerous on offense. The linemen don’t need to hold their blocks long at all and Newsome’s still gone.

      • Last year teams loaded the box and they still ran right at them, teams could key on Newsome. That Oline was so dominant that they didn’t need to mix it up at all, but they still had the players to do what they did last night. Your right they’re much more dangerous and can beat you in so many different ways, with more than one player doing the damage. Newsome is still the straw stirring the drink though. Their offense is so potent and it’s all weather too. WOW!

    • Hey Kyle …..did you mention old school? Here I am big fella.

  14. What a funny game football is. No matter what we think we see we just dont know. . First it was Watertown and then it was Wilby. The other confusion comes from guys who are just homers and dont realize what they have or dont have on their team. It also doesnt help that Kyle comes on here and is always picking teams or players from his newspaper reading area. (his perogative and great job on radio) Lastly and most significantly are what I call “the whisperers”. They hear something and then repeat it as fact. Most of us dont get to a lot of games so we rely on the knowledge or info of others. For instance how could Naugatuck be so far under the radar that some guys picked Wilby. Naugie looked loaded to me. Big line, ultra quick back, ok defense and it looked like the coaching staff had prepared very well. Yet they were picked to win 3 games by some. Just sayin.

  15. Sorry that really doesn’t weigh as heavily as it looks. Sometimes we rely on your info and it bugs me when I am wrong. then I chalk it up to Kyle’s prejudice. Sorry did not mean to offend.

    • I don’t mind the criticism but I just don’t understand what you’re talking about. If I was picking based on my newspaper or whatever, I would have picked Naugatuck. I just didn’t think they were going to be as good as they looked.

  16. Kyle & Remmy you continue to do a great job! Just like the AHS players & coaching staff! The AHS staff gets over looked because the team makes it look easy but remember in the last 36 years, AHS had 1 losing season & it’s no surprise that’s the only season it was a different coaching staff! You can have all the talent in the world if you don’t have a coaching staff to discipline & lead them it will go to waste, just ask Red Sox fans!

  17. I give up on this season.

  18. Things I learned week 1:

Ansonia is on a totally different level than the rest of the league…again.

There is a huge drop off and then there are a group of teams that are decent.
Then there are many BAD teams.

Yo Drake, forget about Shelton being a playoff team.
I saw them play Cheshire. I have never seen a Shelton team play so badly on defense. Attrocious tackling, poor effort and a gross lack of pride in the program. There is no togetherness on that team. Kids walking around, pouting, having losers limp. I was embarrassed for them. I sure hope Coach Roy rights that ship.

  19. I also learned something this week, forget Newsome breaking the 60 year old record of rushing yards, Its not that he can’t do it its simple he wont be on the field long enough to do it Ansonia now has a potent passing attack to go along with thier running game , The Charger maybe more balance than last years team! No one will give them a game in the NVL except maybe Holy Cross, but i doubt it!
early prediction on the Charger / Hawks game Ansonia 48 Woodland 26 The Hawks score thier pts. in the second half against the chargers JV’s

  20. We learned that Torrington is slow on defense and will struggle against the better teams in the league. If they want to run the ball more effectively they should put Bresson back at TE to solidify that line. As it stands now they lose to Woodland, Holy Cross, Wolcott and Naugy.
We also learned that Ansonia’s athleticism causes serious matchup problems. We also learned that their Defense is out to prove that they’re as good as last years.
I’m gonna hold off crowning the Chargers champs, they only did what they should have done. It wasn’t that great of an accomplishment.

  21. CO guess u forgot or never seen what torrington looked like before Bresson was moved to QB. Granted they completed 5 balls the other nite, but they also dropped 8. I’m not saying it would have mattered , A-TOWN is awesome and they do that to everybody in our league. If your kid played they would have probably rolled the stretcher out a few times. Good luck to u guys the rest of the way and stay healthy cause thats the only thing that can trip them up, especially if 2 gets hurt.

  22. It’s not an indictment of Bressons QB ability, he’s a solid QB and a heck of an athlete. I just think he’d have a bigger impact over the course of a game. Let’s say they ran 40-50 offensive plays and of those plays he ran 5 and threw 12. He is involved in 17 plays. Put him at TE and run to him 50% of the time, throw him 3 or 4 times and he’s impacted 25 to 30 plays. Just a thought.
