Chat with Coach
NVL Blog: NVL fans know quarterback Michael Kreiger and running back Tyrae Small will have solid seasons, but who are some other guys flying under the radar this year for the Raiders that will make a big impact on the field?
Coach French: “Jordan LaRue is a name that people are going to learn a lot about this season. He was forced into the lineup as a sophomore when Jacob Tomczak was hurt two years ago and has been really productive for us over the past two years. I would also keep an eye on two sophomores, Charlie Sampson and Richard Bartone. They are young, but tough young men. They can crack our lineup in multiple ways.”
NVL Blog: You are entering your fourth season as head coach at Derby. What kind of impact can you say you’ve had on this program since taking over?
Coach French: “Our first year at Derby, we really had to change the work ethic and attitude of the team. Year one we probably had 12-15 kids each day in the weight room all summer long. In year four we have 30-40 kids in the weight room every day all summer long. The kids believe in our system and believe that when they step on the field they can play and compete with anyone.”
NVL Blog: St. Paul quarterback Logan Marchi comes to town Week 1. How do you plan to stop the Falcons’ “Air-Raid?”
Coach French: “Logan is a great quarterback and is going to get his yards. We just have to make sure we put our athletes in position to make plays. If they are out of position against Logan, he will make it hurt.”
Derby opens the season Sept. 13 against St. Paul at DeFilippo Field. That game will be broadcast live on WELI 960 AM.
